La voz de la derrota de Israel

 

A commentary on an extraordinary confession by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz

A few days ago, Haaretz – one of the most influential Israeli newspapers – has published an extraordinary article. Under the telling title “Saying What Can't Be Said: Israel Has Been Defeated – a Total Defeat”, the author presents an utterly pessimistic picture about Israel’s war in Gaza and its general state of affairs. As this is not an “opinion article” but written by the papers “Political Correspondent”, it is fair to say that this document represents the viewpoint of Haaretz. [1]

 

Let us first reproduce the most important parts of this remarkable article.

 

“We've lost. Truth must be told. The inability to admit it encapsulates everything you need to know about Israel's individual and mass psychology. There's a clear, sharp, predictable reality that we should begin to fathom, to process, to understand and to draw conclusions from for the future. It's no fun to admit that we've lost, so we lie to ourselves.

 

[…] We can’t say it, but we’ve lost. People have an inclination to believe in the best and be optimistic, hoping that tomorrow will be okay, that we are in a process that in the end will be more successful. That’s the most fundamental failure of human thought: the notion that the direction we are taking is a good one, that we just need to get there already – that in just a little more time, with a little more effort, the hostages will be returned, Hamas will surrender and Yahya Sinwar will be killed. After all, we’re the good guys, and good will triumph.

 

It’s the same mentality that leads to the notion that “the Iranian regime will soon implode” and other notions that have more to do with Hollywood scripts than life itself. They’re not the truth and it relates to something that’s uncomfortable. After all, it’s uncomfortable telling the public the truth.

 

[…] No cabinet minister will restore our sense of personal security. Every Iranian threat will make us tremble. Our international standing was dealt a beating. Our leadership’s weakness was revealed to the outside. For years we managed to fool them into thinking we were a strong country, a wise people and a powerful army. In truth, we’re a shtetl with an air force, and that’s on the condition that its awakened in time.

 

[…] Rafah is the newest bluff that the mouthpieces are plying to fool us and make us think that victory is just moments away. By the time they enter Rafah, the actual event will have lost its significance. There may be an incursion, perhaps a tiny one, sometime – say in May. After that, they’ll peddle the next lie, that all we have to do is ________ (fill in the blank), and victory will be on its way. The reality is that the war’s aims will not be achieved. Hamas will not be eradicated. The hostages will not be returned through military pressure. Security will not be reestablished.

 

The more the mouthpieces shout that “we’re winning,” the clearer it is that we’re losing. Lying is their craft. We need to get used to that. Life is less secure than before October 7. The beating we took will sting for years to come. The international ostracism won’t go away. And, of course, the dead won’t be coming back. Nor will many of the hostages.

 

For some of us, life will get back on track, with the petrifying fear of an imminent repeat. And for some of us, life won’t get back on track. Those people will walk among us like the living dead. That’s what we voted for. That’s how it is. We need to get used to the sad reality in our homeland.”

 

So, basically, the articles recognizes that Israel has lost the war. Of course, Israel’s armies have not been eradicated. But in a war between the officially fourth-strongest army in the world against the guerilla forces of the Palestinian resistance in the small enclave of Gaza (with a population of 2.3 million people), the standards for success are different.

 

True, Israel has “succeeded” to commit a genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza, to slaughter tens of thousands of people, to destroy most houses and to displace most of the population. But despite all these horrible war crimes and despite the fact that Israel is waging the longest war in its history, it has not been able to defeat the Herculean Palestinians!

 

As a matter of fact, Israel’s all-powerful army – with total superiority in air, sea and land, with AI-powered killer programs, the most modern missiles and bombs, and with unlimited financial, political and military support by U.S. imperialism – has failed to conquer the strip, has failed to defeat the heroic resistance forces and has failed to bring back its hostages. What a remarkable achievement for the resistance forces, as my comrade Yossi Schwartz – a Anti-Zionist Jew in Israel and Trotskyist for six decades – pointed out already some time ago. [2]

 

Not only this, has never before has Israel been so isolated in international politics. It has become a country hated and despised by the popular masses all around the world. The Zionist’s genocidal war has provoked an unprecedented pro-Palestine solidarity movement which continues to mobilise ceaselessly against the Apartheid and Terror state. A number of trade unions have already taken active boycott actions against military and economic deliveries to Israel. Under the pressure of the masses, an increasing number of bourgeois governments feel obligated to criticize and to distance themselves from the Zionist entity. The same pressure has pushed the ICJ to open an investigation about Israel’s genocide in Gaza and even the UN Security Council felt obligated to vote for a ceasefire – against the furious resistance by Israel and their American masters.

 

This is not to deny all the difficulties and dangers ahead. The killers will continue to kill, and the traitors will continue to betray. Still, it is great to see the heroic Palestinian people dealing a political defeat to the Zionist state!

Un comentario sobre una confesión extraordinaria del periódico israelí Haaretz

Hace unos días, Haaretz –uno de los periódicos israelíes más influyentes de Israel– publicó un artículo extraordinario. Bajo el revelador título “Diciendo lo que no se puede decir: Israel ha sido derrotado, una derrota total”, el autor presenta un panorama absolutamente pesimista sobre la guerra de Israel en Gaza y su situación general. Como este no es un “artículo de opinión” sino escrito por el “Corresponsal Político” del periódico, es justo decir que este documento representa el punto de vista de Haaretz. [1]

 

Primero reproduzcamos las partes más importantes de este notable artículo

 

“Hemos perdido. Hay que decir la verdad. La incapacidad de admitirlo resume todo lo que se necesita saber sobre la psicología individual y de masas de Israel. Hay una realidad clara, clara y predecible que deberíamos empezar a sondear, procesar, comprender y de la que sacar conclusiones para el futuro. No es divertido admitir que hemos perdido, por eso nos mentimos a nosotros mismos.

 

[…] No podemos decirlo, pero hemos perdido. La gente tiene tendencia a creer en lo mejor y ser optimista, esperando que mañana todo esté bien, que estemos en un proceso que al final será más exitoso. Ése es el fallo más fundamental del pensamiento humano: la noción de que la dirección que estamos tomando es buena, que simplemente tenemos que llegar allí ya, que en un poco más de tiempo, con un poco más de esfuerzo, los rehenes serán devueltos. Hamás se rendirá y Yahya Sinwar será asesinado. Después de todo, somos los buenos y el bien triunfará.

 

Es la misma mentalidad que lleva a la noción de que “el régimen iraní pronto implosionará” y otras nociones que tienen más que ver con los guiones de Hollywood que con la vida misma. No son la verdad y se relaciona con algo que es incómodo. Después de todo, es incómodo decirle la verdad al público.

 

[…] Ningún ministro del gabinete restaurará nuestra sensación de seguridad personal. Cada amenaza iraní nos hará temblar. Nuestra posición internacional sufrió un duro golpe. La debilidad de nuestro liderazgo se reveló al exterior. Durante años logramos engañarlos haciéndoles creer que éramos un país fuerte, un pueblo sabio y un ejército poderoso. En realidad, somos una villa con fuerza aérea, y eso con la condición de que se despierte a tiempo.

 

[…] Rafah es el último farol que los portavoces están tramando para engañarnos y hacernos pensar que la victoria está a sólo unos minutos de distancia. Para cuando entren en Rafah, el acontecimiento real habrá perdido su significado. Puede haber una incursión, quizás pequeña, en algún momento, digamos en mayo. Después de eso, venderán la siguiente mentira, que todo lo que tenemos que hacer es ____ (llene el espacio en blanco), y la victoria estará en camino. La realidad es que los objetivos de la guerra no se lograrán. Hamás no será erradicado. Los rehenes no serán devueltos mediante presión militar y la seguridad no se restablecerá.

 

Cuanto más gritan los portavoces que “estamos ganando”, más claro es que estamos perdiendo. Mentir es su oficio. Necesitamos acostumbrarnos a eso. La vida es menos segura que antes del 7 de octubre. La paliza que recibimos dolerá durante años. El ostracismo internacional no desaparecerá. Y, por supuesto, los muertos no volverán. Tampoco lo harán muchos de los rehenes. Para algunos de nosotros, la vida volverá a su cauce, con el miedo petrificante de una repetición inminente. Y para algunos de nosotros, la vida no volverá a encaminarse. Esa gente caminará entre nosotros como muertos vivientes. Eso es lo que votamos. Así es como es. Necesitamos acostumbrarnos a la triste realidad de nuestra patria."

 

Básicamente, el artículo reconoce que Israel ha perdido la guerra. Por supuesto, los ejércitos de Israel no han sido erradicados. Pero en una guerra entre el ejército oficialmente cuarto más fuerte del mundo contra las fuerzas guerrilleras de la resistencia palestina en el pequeño enclave de Gaza (con una población de 2,3 millones de personas), los estándares para el éxito son diferentes.

 

Es cierto que Israel ha “logrado” cometer un genocidio contra el pueblo palestino en Gaza, masacrar a decenas de miles de personas, destruir la mayoría de las casas y desplazar a la mayor parte de la población. Pero a pesar de todos estos horribles crímenes de guerra y a pesar del hecho de que Israel está librando la guerra más larga de su historia, ¡no ha podido derrotar a los heroicos palestinos!

 

De hecho, el todopoderoso ejército de Israel –con superioridad total en aire, mar y tierra, con programas asesinos impulsados por inteligencia artificial, los misiles y bombas más modernos, y con apoyo financiero, político y militar ilimitado por parte del imperialismo estadounidense– ha no logró conquistar la franja, no logró derrotar a las fuerzas de resistencia ni pudo traer de regreso a sus rehenes. Qué logro tan notable para las fuerzas de resistencia, como señaló hace algún tiempo mi camarada Yossi Schwartz, un judío antisionista en Israel y trotskista durante seis décadas. [2]

 

No sólo esto: nunca antes Israel había estado tan aislado en la política internacional, se ha convertido en un país odiado y despreciado por las masas populares de todo el mundo. La guerra genocida de los sionistas ha provocado un movimiento de solidaridad pro Palestina sin precedentes que continúa movilizándose incesantemente contra el Estado de Apartheid y Terror. Varios sindicatos ya han emprendido acciones activas de boicot contra los suministros militares y económicos a Israel.

 

Bajo la presión de las masas, un número cada vez mayor de gobiernos burgueses se sienten obligados a criticar y distanciarse de la entidad sionista. La misma presión ha empujado a la CIJ a abrir una investigación sobre el genocidio de Israel en Gaza e incluso el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU se sintió obligado a votar a favor de un alto el fuego, contra la furiosa resistencia de Israel y sus amos estadounidenses.

 

Esto no significa negar todas las dificultades y peligros que se avecinan, para nada, ya que los asesinos seguirán matando y los traidores seguirán traicionando. Aun así, ¡es fantástico ver al heroico pueblo palestino propinarle una derrota política al Estado sionista!
