1. Since 16 August, mass protests are spreading across those regions in Syria which are under control of the Assad regime. These demonstrations have been provoked by dramatically worsening living conditions after the regime lifted subsidies on gasoline and fuel oil. As a result, the price of one liter of gasoline rose from 3,000 Syrian pounds to 8,000 pounds and the price of a liter of fuel oil rose from 700 pounds to 2,000. Such developments will have massive consequences for transport costs and hence for all sectors of the economy. These attacks on living conditions take place against the background of already extremely dire situation where, according to the UN, 90% of the population lives in poverty, and more than half the population is food insecure.
2. While similar demonstrations against worsening living conditions did take place in the south of the country in the past three years, the current protests are remarkable as they are more widespread. Demonstrators gathered in at least 15 towns across Daraa, Rif Dimashq and Suwayda provinces. In the latter province, a general strike was declared. In Deir ez Zor City, butchers went on strike after the governor raised the prices of a kilo of meat. There were protests even in Jaramna, a suburb of the capital city, Damascus. Furthermore, the protests have a distinct political character since demonstrators also chant slogans against the tyranny of Assad like "Bashar … Go! We want to live!" One group of protesters issued a statement declaring its non-recognition of the Syrian regime, calling the regime "usurped by the Russian occupier and Iranian militias." The protests are supported by various local opposition groups and militias like the 10 August Movement, the Association for Free Men of the Arab Mountain, or the Sheikhs of Dignity.
3. The Revolutionary Communist International Tendency (RCIT) strongly welcomes this new wave of mass protests and sends it warmest greetings to the heroic people of Syria! This uprising – in addition to the fact that heroic people of Idlib continue to keep their region liberated – is another confirmation that the Syrian Revolution is not dead, contrary to the cynical claims of the cowards and renegades. We reiterate that the Assad regime only appears as strong. But in reality, it is weak and totally depends on the support by Putin and the Mullahs. If these protests continue and deepen, they could help to renew the revolutionary offensive to bring down the Assad tyranny.
4. It is crucial that the oppressed masses take the struggle in their own hands and don’t let the decisions made by some self-proclaimed but uncontrolled “leaders”. All decisions should be taken by the people organized in councils and militias respective by their elected (and accountable) leaders. It is urgent to appeal to the ordinary soldiers of the Assad militias (who often have been pressed into service) to desert and to join the liberations struggle.
5. The Syrian Revolution was and remains part of the glorious Arab Revolution which started in 2011. The liberation struggles against the tyrants, against the imperialist Great Powers and against Zionism – from Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, to Ahwaz, Iran and Palestine – these are all part of one and the same ongoing revolutionary process in the region. These need to be united to a single Intifada! Furthermore, it is urgent to build an international solidarity movement in support of the Syrian Revolution. We call revolutionary activists to join forces in an authentic revolutionary party – nationally and internationally – which can lead the liberation struggle to victory! Join the RCIT!

1. 8월 16일부터 바샤르 아사드 정권 치하 시리아 전역에서 대규모 시위가 확산되고 있다. 아사드 정권이 휘발유와 연료유에 대한 보조금을 폐지한 뒤 노동자·민중의 생활조건이 급격히 악화되면서 이 시위가 촉발된 것이다. 보조금 폐지 결과, 휘발유 1리터의 가격이 3,000 시리아 파운드에서 8,000 시리아 파운드로 인상됐고, 연료유 1리터의 가격은 700 시리아 파운드에서 2,000 시리아 파운드로 등귀했다. 이에 따라 운송비가 대폭으로 올랐고, 동시에 경제 모든 부문에 심각한 결과를 초래하고 있다. 이러한 생활조건에 대한 아사드 자본가 정부의 공격은 이미 극도의 생계난에 처해 있는 노동자 민중을 벼랑 밑으로 내모는 공격이다. 주민 90%가 빈곤선 아래서 살고 있고 반 이상이 식량 공급 불안정 상태에 있는 이 같은 심각한 상황에서 민중 생존권 공격이 가해지고 있는 것이다.
2. 지난 3년 시리아 남부에서도 생활조건 악화에 반대하는 비슷한 시위가 벌어졌지만, 이번 시위는 전 지역으로 확산되고 있다는 점에서 더욱 주목되고 있다. 다라, 리프 디마슈크, 스웨이다 등 각 주의 최소 15개 도시에서 대중시위가 전개됐다. 스웨이다 주에서는 총파업이 선포되었다. 수도 다마스쿠스 교외 자람나에서도 시위가 있었다. 나아가, 시위자들이 “바샤르 가버려라! 우리는 살고 싶다!” 같은 아사드 정권에 반대하는 구호도 외치면서 시위가 점점 정치적 성격을 띠어가고 있다. 일단의 시위대는 시리아가 “러시아 점령군과 이란 민병대에 의해 국권을 찬탈당했다”며 현 체제 불인정을 선포하는 성명문을 배포했다. 그리고 다양한 지역 반정부 단체들과 8,10 운동 같은 민병 그룹들이 시위를 지지하고 있다.
3. 혁명적 공산주의인터내셔널 동맹 (RCIT)은 이 새로운 대중시위 물결을 강력히 환영하며 영웅적인 시리아 민중들에게 연대의 인사를 보낸다! 이 항쟁은 ㅡ 현재 이들리브의 반군 전사들이 지역에서 해방투쟁을 영웅적으로 이어가고 있는 사실에 더해 ㅡ 겁쟁이들과 변절자들의 냉소적인 주장과는 달리 시리아 혁명이 죽지 않았다는 것을 다시 한 번 확인시켜주는 증거다. 아사드 정권은 단지 강하게 보이는 것일 뿐, 실제로는 푸틴과 이란 반동 성직자 정권의 지지 없이는 단 하루도 버틸 수 없다. 항쟁이 지속 심화되면, 다시 혁명적 공세를 재개하여 아사드 폭압정권을 끝장낼 수 있는 결정적 계기들이 곧 나올 것이다.
4. 피억압 대중이 투쟁을 자력으로 끌고 나가고, 통제되지 않는 자칭 "지도자들"에게 결정을 내맡기지 않는 것이 중요하다. 모든 결정은 평의회와 민병으로 조직된 민중들과 이 민중들이 선출한 (그리고 언제든 소환 가능한) 지도자들에 의해 내려져야 한다. 아사드 정권 민병대의 일반 병사들 (많은 경우 강제 복역 중인)에게 탈영하여 해방투쟁에 동참할 것을 호소하는 것이 시급합니다.

1. Desde el 16 de agosto, las protestas masivas se están extendiendo por las regiones de Siria que están bajo el control del régimen de Assad. Estas manifestaciones han sido provocadas por el dramático empeoramiento de las condiciones de vida después de que el régimen levantara los subsidios a la gasolina y el combustóleo. Como resultado, el precio de un litro de gasolina aumentó de 3.000 libras sirias a 8.000 libras, y el precio de un litro de combustóleo aumentó de 700 libras a 2.000. Esta evolución tendrá enormes consecuencias para los costes del transporte y, por tanto, para todos los sectores de la economía. Estos ataques a las condiciones de vida se producen en el contexto de una situación ya extremadamente grave en la que, según la ONU, el 90% de la población vive en la pobreza y más de la mitad de la población padece inseguridad alimentaria.
2. Si bien en los últimos tres años se han producido manifestaciones similares contra el empeoramiento de las condiciones de vida en el sur del país, las protestas actuales son notables porque están más generalizadas. Los manifestantes se reunieron en al menos 15 ciudades de las provincias de Daraa, Rif Dimashq y Suwayda. En esta última provincia se declaró una huelga general. En la ciudad de Deir ez Zor, los carniceros se declararon en huelga después de que el gobernador aumentara el precio del kilo de carne. Hubo protestas incluso en Jaramna, un suburbio de la capital, Damasco. Además, las protestas tienen un carácter político distinto ya que los manifestantes también corearon consignas contra la tiranía de Assad como "Bashar... ¡Vete! ¡Queremos vivir!" Un grupo de manifestantes emitió una declaración expresando su no reconocimiento del régimen sirio, calificando al régimen de "usurpado por el ocupante ruso y las milicias iraníes". Las protestas cuentan con el apoyo de varios grupos de oposición locales y milicias como el Movimiento 10 de Agosto , la Asociación de Hombres Libres de la Montaña Árabe o los Jeques de la Dignidad.
3. !La Corriente Comunista Revolucionaria Internacional (CCRI) acoge con gran satisfacción esta nueva ola de protestas masivas y envía sus más cálidos saludos al heroico pueblo de Siria! Este levantamiento -además del hecho de que el heroico pueblo de Idlib continúa manteniendo liberada su región- es otra confirmación de que la Revolución Siria no está muerta, contrariamente a las cínicas afirmaciones de los cobardes y renegados. Reiteramos que el régimen de Assad sólo parece fuerte. Pero en realidad es débil y depende totalmente del apoyo de Putin y los mulás. Si estas protestas continúan y se profundizan, podrían ayudar a renovar la ofensiva revolucionaria para derribar la tiranía de Assad.
4. Es crucial que las masas oprimidas tomen la lucha en sus propias manos y no dejen que las decisiones sean tomadas por algunos "líderes" autoproclamados pero incontrolados. Todas las decisiones deben ser tomadas por el pueblo organizado en consejos y milicias, respectivamente, por sus líderes electos (y responsables). Es urgente hacer un llamamiento a los soldados rasos de las milicias de Assad (que a menudo han sido obligados a prestar servicio) para que deserten y se unan a la lucha por la liberación.
5. La Revolución Siria fue y sigue siendo parte de la gloriosa Revolución Árabe que comenzó en 2011. Las luchas de liberación contra los tiranos, contra las grandes potencias imperialistas y contra el sionismo -desde Siria, Irak, Líbano hasta Ahwaz, Irán y Palestina- estas son todos parte de un mismo proceso revolucionario en curso en la región. ¡Es necesario unirlos en una sola Intifada!
