Ukraine War: A Mistaken Polemic

Reply to a critique of the FT/PTS of LIT-CI’s defence of the Ukraine

By Michael Pröbsting, International Secretary of the Revolutionary Communist International Tendency (RCIT), 13 September 2022, www.thecommunists.net

The “Trotskyist Faction”, an international organisation with the Argentinean PTS as the strongest party, has published a critique of another international Trotskyist current, the Morenoite LIT-CI, and its section in the U.S. (Workers’ Voice). Basically, the author attacks LIT-CI for its defence of the Ukraine against Putin’s invasion since the FT/PTS refuses to side with the Ukrainian people and takes a shameful neutral position. [1]

In contrast, the RCIT and its comrades in Russia have taken a consistent internationalist and anti-imperialist position since the beginning of the war. We have summarised our position in the slogan: Defend the Ukraine against Putin’s invasion! Against Russian and against NATO imperialism!

At this place, we will not elaborate our position in detail and refer interested readers to the relevant documents of the RCIT. [2] Here, we rather will focus on replying briefly to the polemic of FT/PTS. Basically, we consider their critique as wrong, and we share with LIT-CI the fundamental position of defending the Ukrainian people against Putin’s invasion. Such agreement has been expressed in a joint statement which we signed with UIT-CI and LIT-CI shortly after the beginning of the war. [3] And on the basis of such agreement, we collaborated with the comrades of LIT-Ci in organising a convoy bringing humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian resistance. [4]

The FT denies the fact that the struggle of the Ukrainian people is a legitimate war of national defence. Related to this, they claim that Russia is not an imperialist power. Consequently, they criticise LIT-CI for their support of the Ukraine’s right to get weapons from Western states.

While there is no doubt that Russia’s offensive in Ukraine is reactionary and horrendous, modern Russia is not imperialist. It’s a country that expresses a profoundly unequal and combined character. On the one hand, it has nuclear weapons and a powerful army, largely inherited from the USSR and built up buy its oil wealth. On the other hand, Russia’s economy is subordinated to Western capital because its productive forces were decimated after capitalist restoration, turning it into a primarily oil-exporting country. This analysis helps us understand what led to the current conflict. Ukraine is being used as a proxy by the biggest imperialist powers of the West in their confrontation with Russia.

Denial of Russia’s imperialist character

Both the analysis as well as the programmatic conclusions are wrong. [5] In fact, as we have demonstrated in several comprehensive studies, Russia has become an imperialist power some time ago. True, it is an uneven developed imperialist power which is stronger in the military than in the economic realm. However, such unevenness is no exception and does not contradict our analysis of Russia as an imperialist power. Other imperialist powers – like e.g. Germany or Japan – have also an unevenly developed character as they face the opposite problem of being substantially stronger in the economic than in the military realm. [6]

More importantly, the last six months have clearly demonstrated Russia’s character as an imperialist power not only in military but also in economic terms. Shortly after 24 February, the Western powers imposed the most severe sanctions against their Eastern rival. However, as it is well-known, Russia managed to withstand this economic offensive much better than Western leaders did hope for. [7]

We shall note in passing that the comrades of LIT-CI unfortunately share with the FT/PTS the wrong analysis of Russia as they also deny its imperialist character. LIT-CI has even claimed, absurdly, that in a direct military conflict between NATO and Russia, it “would undoubtedly defend Russia”! [8]

Unfortunately, the comrades of FT/PTS do not only deny Russia’s imperialist character, but they also claim that the Ukraine’s liberation struggle would be merely a proxy war in the service of Western imperialism.

Looking at the case of Ukraine, whose government is subordinated to U.S. imperialism, a military victory, even a partial one, would not only exacerbate the historical tensions between NATO and Russia, which are currently being played out indirectly in Ukraine, but would also strengthen Western imperialism’s objectives in the region and around the world.

Such a statement is wrong since it ignores the fundamental fact that the Ukraine’s war of defense is caused and driven not by Western commands but by the refusal of the people to become a colony of Russia. It is basically the same legitimate reason why the peoples in many other countries – e.g. Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Syria, – have opposed imperialist invaders. The whole history of the Ukrainian nation has been characterized by opposition to Russian domination!

The very fact that the Ukrainian forces were able to resist against the militarily superior Russian forces for such a long time – and even managed to drive them back first from the Kiev region and, in the last days, also from the Kharkiv region – strongly confirms the popular character of the Ukrainian war of defense. Lenin once noted: „In the final analysis, victory in any war depends on the spirit animating the masses that spill their own blood on the field of battle. The conviction that the war is in a just cause and the realisation that their lives must be laid down for the welfare of their brothers strengthen the morale of the fighting men and enable them to endure incredible hardships. [9] The heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people against a much stronger enemy fully confirms this statement!

Furthermore, the arguments of the FT/PTS make their whole approach completely inconsistent. If the Ukraine is merely a proxy of Western imperialism and if Russia is not imperialist … why do the FT/PTS comrades not support “non-imperialist” Russia against the “imperialist proxy” Ukraine?! As a matter of fact, that would be the only consistent – albeit consistently counterrevolutionary – conclusion! As it is well-known, Stalinist and Castro-Chavista parties in many countries have taken such an outrageous position.

Is it illegitimate for oppressed people to get weapons from imperialist states?

While the FT/PTS comrades (fortunately) do not draw such conclusions, they nevertheless call for actions to weaken and bleed to Ukrainian resistance. They say “No more weapons to Ukraine!” and hail activities of Stalinist and semi-Stalinist trade unionists in Europe who blocked weapons shipments to Ukraine. Given the vast superiority of Russia in terms of weapons, such a reactionary policy is nothing but (indirect) support for Russia’s attempt to subjugate the Ukrainian people!

Those who oppose the defence of the Ukraine claim that receiving weapons from NATO countries would make the Ukraine automatically their proxy. However, as a matter of fact, weapons are produced in the arms industry and most of this is located in the richest capitalist countries (i.e. in imperialist states). If “Marxists” a la FT/PTS claim that armed forces of oppressed people must not get weapons from imperialist countries, they objectively defend the absurd logic that the only legitimate anti-imperialist policy would be … a pacifist abandonment of weapons. In other words, they advocate that oppressed people should voluntarily become turkeys voting for Christmas! Obviously, only fools are ready to become martyrs for no cause.

As we demonstrated in several articles, it has always been the position of the Marxist classics that they defended the right of oppressed people to get weapons from wherever possible (including from imperialist powers). This is why Lenin and Trotsky supported the liberation struggle of the Irish people during World War I and refused to criticise them for getting weapons from Germany. The same was true for Ethiopia fighting against the Italian invasion in 1935, for China fighting against Japanese imperialism, etc. In many cases, the oppressed people fought under the leadership of bourgeois forces and received weapons from imperialist powers which were rivals of the aggressor of these oppressed people. [10]

The Ukraine people, like any other people being victim of imperialist aggression, have the same right to get weapons from wherever they can (including from imperialist states). Therefore, the criticism of the FT/PTS is absolutely wrong, and the LTI-CI comrades are right in defending the Ukraine’s right to get weapons from Western countries.

Of course, it is true that NATO tries to influence the developments in the Ukraine as much as possible and surely, they utilise sending weapons as a means of pressure. But the answer to such danger is not to abstain from getting weapons because a Ukraine without weapons can not fight. The answer is rather that socialists both in Western countries as well as in the Ukraine must oppose both NATO as well as the bourgeois and pro-imperialist Zelensky government. They have to advocate the formation of independent working-class organisations (including military formations).

But socialists must not wait with supporting the victim of imperialist aggression until such independent working-class organisations have come into existence. It is ABC for Marxists that a national and democratic struggle of an oppressed people is legitimate in itself and must be supported even if it is under the leadership of bourgeois forces. The same, by the way, is also true for other democratic struggles (like the struggle in defence of the right of abortion or against Islamophobia).

The RCIT has always warned against the interference of NATO imperialism. We have made clear that it is wrong and unprincipled for socialists to lend support to any Great Power in East and West. Hence, socialists must not support the sanctions war of one imperialist camp against the other. As we did elaborate in other works, LIT-CI makes a serious opportunist concession to Western imperialism by supporting its sanctions against Russia and by calling even for their escalation. (Strangely, the FT/PTS article does not criticise this mistake of LIT-CI!) [11]

Conclusions

We shall conclude by reiterating that the whole conflict has a dual character. Unfortunately, many socialists fail to understand this. The RCIT noted in its Manifesto, published a few days after the beginning of the war:

It is impossible to have a correct orientation in the current world situation without understanding the complex nature of regional and global contradictions between the classes and the powers. The basis of a correct analysis is the recognition of the fact that we currently face two lines of contradictions. The two processes are interdependent and influence each other but they are not identical. Every opportunist deviation – either towards Russian imperialism or towards Western imperialism – has its theoretical basis in the failure to understand the contradictory character of the current situation.

The Russian invasion in the Ukraine is the result of the imperialist character of Russia as well as the escalation of tensions between the Great Powers in East and West. Therefore, the resistance of the Ukrainian people is a just war of defense against an imperialist attack. At the same time, the Western imperialist powers try to utilize this war for their own interests. The ruling class in the European Union and the U.S. exploit the war as a pretext to accelerate militarism and armament. They try to utilize Zelensky – a willing lackey of U.S. and EU imperialism – in order to transform the just struggle of the Ukrainian people into a proxy war.[12]

Such dual character of the current conflict has essentially remained in place since we published these lines.

From such an analysis we have concluded that the national war of defence of the Ukrainian people has a progressive and legitimate character and, therefore, socialists must support their resistance against the invasion of imperialist Russia. At the same time, we also recognize the reactionary character of the inter-imperialist rivalry between the Great Powers. In this conflict, socialists oppose both camps – Russia as well as NATO. We summarized our position in the following slogans:

* Defend the Ukraine! Defeat Russian imperialism! International popular solidarity with the Ukrainian national resistance – independent of any imperialist influence!

* Down with all imperialist powers – NATO and EU as well as Russia! In all conflicts between these powers, revolutionaries oppose both camps!

We hope that the comrades both of LIT-CI as well as of the FT/PTS rethink their analysis and tactics in the Ukraine War. There is no doubt that a serious discussion among socialists would be highly beneficial for clarifying and, hopefully, overcoming differences!

* Defender a Ucrânia! Derrotar o imperialismo russo!

¡Defendamos a Ucrania!
