Defend Afghanistan against chauvinist aggression! For national self-determination and cross-border solidarity!

On 22 February, Pakistan attacked Afghanistan with a series of airstrikes which killed 18 people, including women and children, all from a single family in Girdi Kas. Four days later, Afghan forces retaliated and Pakistan’s military launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq ("Righteous Fury").

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared that “our patience has now run out. Now it is open war between us.” Both sides have targeted each other's posts across the 2,600-km border and Pakistan’s air force bombarded Kabul and other Afghan cities. Since then, dozens of people have been killed on both sides.

Pakistan’s government justifies its war against Afghanistan by claiming that it would harbour “terrorists”, i.e. the Pashtun-based Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). As we elaborated in past statements, the real reason is rather the explosive national question in Pakistan – a result of the brutal national oppression of the Pashtun, Baloch and other peoples by Islamabad. The conflict is further complicated by the colonial legacy in South Asia as the British Empire artificially created the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan in 1893. Afghanistan refuses to accept this border line – which it rightly calls the “hypothetical Durand Line” – as it divides the Pashtuns as well as the Baloch between different states. The armed insurrection of the TTP – a petty-bourgeois Islamist movement – is a result of such oppression.

In this conflict, socialists side with the Pashtun people and their resistance against national oppression by the Pakistani state. We defend Afghanistan against Islamabad’s hegemonistic policy. At the same time, we lend no political support to the reactionary leadership of the TTP or the Afghan Taliban – a government which oppresses the popular masses, women’s rights, etc.

As socialists we oppose nationalist hatred between peoples and advocate solidarity across ethnic and national lines. The workers and peasants, those who face exploitation by the rich and powerful, must join forces and fight for social justice and national self-determination. Such unity of the popular masses is particularly relevant in times like this where American-Zionist imperialism viciously attacks Iran. We say: defend Iran – defeat the imperialists! Drive the U.S. out of the region! (2)

¡Defendamos Afganistán de la agresión chovinista! ¡Por la autodeterminación nacional y la solidaridad transfronteriza!

El 22 de febrero, Pakistán atacó Afganistán con una serie de ataques aéreos que causaron la muerte de 18 personas, entre ellas mujeres y niños, todos pertenecientes a una misma familia en Girdi Kas. Cuatro días después, las fuerzas afganas respondieron y el ejército pakistaní lanzó la Operación Ghazab lil-Haq ("Furia Justa").

El ministro de Defensa pakistaní, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, declaró: "Nuestra paciencia se ha agotado. Ahora es una guerra abierta entre nosotros". Ambos bandos han atacado puestos del otro a lo largo de los 2.600 km de frontera y la fuerza aérea pakistaní ha bombardeado Kabul y otras ciudades afganas. Desde entonces, decenas de personas han muerto en ambos bandos. El gobierno de Pakistán justifica su guerra contra Afganistán alegando que albergaría a "terroristas", es decir, al Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), con sede en los pastunes. Como explicamos en declaraciones anteriores, la verdadera razón es la explosiva cuestión nacional en Pakistán, resultado de la brutal opresión nacional de los pastunes, baluchis y otros pueblos por parte de Islamabad. El conflicto se complica aún más por el legado colonial en el sur de Asia, ya que el Imperio Británico creó artificialmente la frontera entre Afganistán y Pakistán en 1893. Afganistán se niega a aceptar esta línea fronteriza, a la que acertadamente llama la "hipotética Línea Durand", ya que divide a los pastunes y a los baluchis entre diferentes estados. La insurrección armada del TTP, un movimiento islamista pequeñoburgués, es resultado de dicha opresión.

En este conflicto, los socialistas apoyamos al pueblo pastún y su resistencia contra la opresión nacional del Estado pakistaní. Defendemos a Afganistán contra la política hegemónica de Islamabad. Al mismo tiempo, no brindamos ningún apoyo político a la dirigencia reaccionaria del TTP ni a los talibanes afganos, un gobierno que oprime a las masas populares, los derechos de las mujeres, etc.

Como socialistas, nos oponemos al odio nacionalista entre los pueblos y abogamos por la solidaridad entre etnias y nacionalidades. Los trabajadores y campesinos, quienes sufren la explotación de los ricos y poderosos, deben unir fuerzas y luchar por la justicia social y la autodeterminación nacional. Esta unidad de las masas populares es particularmente relevante en momentos como este, cuando el imperialismo sionista estadounidense ataca ferozmente a Irán. Decimos: ¡Defendamos a Irán, derrotemos a los imperialistas! ¡Expulsemos a Estados Unidos de la región! (2)

Défendons l’Afghanistan contre l’agression chauvine ! Pour l’autodétermination nationale et la solidarité transfrontalière !

Le 22 février, le Pakistan a lancé une série de frappes aériennes contre l'Afghanistan, faisant 18 victimes, dont des femmes et des enfants, tous membres d'une même famille à Girdi Kas. Quatre jours plus tard, les forces afghanes ont riposté et l'armée pakistanaise a lancé l'opération Ghazab lil-Haq (« Juste Fureur »).

Le ministre pakistanais de la Défense, Khawaja Mohammad Asif, a déclaré : « Notre patience a atteint ses limites. C'est désormais la guerre ouverte.» Les deux camps ont ciblé les positions adverses le long des 2 600 km de frontière, et l'aviation pakistanaise a bombardé Kaboul et d'autres villes afghanes. Depuis, des dizaines de personnes ont été tuées des deux côtés.

Le gouvernement pakistanais justifie sa guerre contre l'Afghanistan en affirmant que ce pays abriterait des « terroristes », en l'occurrence le Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), un groupe armé à base pachtoune. Comme nous l'avons expliqué dans nos précédentes déclarations, la véritable raison réside plutôt dans la question nationale explosive au Pakistan, fruit de la brutale oppression nationale exercée par Islamabad sur les Pachtounes, les Baloutches et d'autres peuples. Le conflit est encore compliqué par l'héritage colonial en Asie du Sud, l'Empire britannique ayant artificiellement tracé la frontière entre l'Afghanistan et le Pakistan en 1893. L'Afghanistan refuse de reconnaître cette ligne de démarcation, qu'il qualifie à juste titre de « ligne Durand hypothétique », car elle divise les Pachtounes et les Baloutches entre différents États. L'insurrection armée du TTP, un mouvement islamiste petit-bourgeois, est une conséquence de cette oppression.

Dans ce conflit, les socialistes se rangent du côté du peuple pachtoune et de sa résistance contre l'oppression nationale exercée par l'État pakistanais. Nous défendons l'Afghanistan contre la politique hégémonique d'Islamabad. Dans le même temps, nous n'apportons aucun soutien politique à la direction réactionnaire du TTP ni aux Talibans afghans – un gouvernement qui opprime les masses populaires, bafoue les droits des femmes, etc.

En tant que socialistes, nous nous opposons à la haine nationaliste entre les peuples et prônons la solidarité par-delà les clivages ethniques et nationaux. Les ouvriers et les paysans, victimes de l'exploitation par les riches et les puissants, doivent s'unir et lutter pour la justice sociale et l'autodétermination nationale. Cette unité des masses populaires est particulièrement cruciale en ces temps où l'impérialisme américano-sioniste s'attaque violemment à l'Iran. Nous disons : défendons l'Iran ! Vainquons les impérialistes ! Chassons les États-Unis de la région ! (2)
