Confront the Murder of a Worker by State Violence with Class Struggle!

On 20 April 2026, the death of Comrade Seo Gwang-seok in front of the CU logistics center in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, was by no means an accidental incident. Seo, the head of the Jeonnam Container Branch of the Cargo Truckers’ Solidarity Union, was killed after being run over by a replacement transport truck during a police crackdown on a sit-in protest.

 

This was not a simple unfortunate event. It was a clear act of murder carried out by state power in collusion with capital to crush workers.

 

 

 

1. Background of the Incident: The Inevitable Result of Structural Exploitation

 

 

 

The death of Comrade Seo did not occur suddenly. It was the result of years of accumulated exploitation and repression. BGF Retail maximized its profits through a multi-layered subcontracting structure – “BGF Logistics – regional subcontractors – truck drivers” – while forcing workers to endure long working hours, low freight rates, emotional labour, and the burden of vehicle costs. While corporate profits increased by 813%, freight rates rose by only 0.6%. This is the material basis of the current struggle.

 

Since January this year, the Cargo Truckers’ Solidarity Union CU branch requested negotiations with the main contractor, BGF Retail, seven times. BGF did not respond even once. Reduction of work volume, contract termination, and claims for damages – this was capital’s answer to workers. Even after the strike began on April 5, the company pushed ahead with replacement transport instead of dialogue.

 

2,700 truck workers had gathered at the site. They were fighting for their right to survive. Their struggle was entirely justified. Yet what they received was not dialogue, but repression – and ultimately, the death of a comrade.

 

 

 

2. Threefold Responsibility

 

 

 

First, the responsibility of CU BGF capital. BGF Retail ignored workers’ legitimate demands for negotiation seven times and enforced replacement transport to break the strike. The driver of the replacement vehicle did not stop even though a person had fallen in front of him. The vehicles behind did the same. For profit, they sacrificed a worker’s life. BGF is murderous capital.

 

Second, the responsibility of the police and state power. The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency ignored the safety of striking workers and acted as a servant of BGF by supporting the departure of replacement vehicles. Even as a worker was dying after being struck, they neglected the critical golden time for rescue. Afterwards, the courts issued arrest warrants even against the enraged union members. The state is not neutral. It is a tool of the ruling class. This has once again been proven.

 

Third, the responsibility of the current government. The Lee Jae-myung administration pledged a country without repression of labour. Yet less than two months after this promise, a worker was killed at a strike site. This is deception and betrayal of the working class. Not only conservative parties but also the Democratic Party represent the interests of capital. Do not trust them. Only our class unity can defend workers’ rights.

 

 

 

3. This Death Is Not a Personal Tragedy

 

 

 

The death of Comrade Seo Gwang-seok is a death produced by the capitalist system. Seventeen years after the martyr Park Jong-tae in 2009, the Cargo Truckers’ Solidarity has lost another comrade. Choi Bok-nam, Kim Dong-yoon, Park Jong-tae, and now Seo Gwang-seok.

 

As long as capitalism continues, these deaths will be repeated. Unless we put an end to a system that prioritizes profit over workers’ lives, second and third Seo Gwang-seoks will continue to emerge.

 

The struggle of truck workers is not an issue of a single workplace. It is part of the class war across Korean society. What happened in front of the CU logistics center is the reality facing all workers crushed by subcontracting structures, all platform workers, and all those denied even the right to strike.

 

 

 

4. Our Demands

 

 

 

* A thorough investigation into Seo Gwang-seok’s death and punishment of those responsible

 

* Immediate end to union repression by CU BGF capital and full acceptance of the union’s demands

 

* Punishment of those responsible for ordering police violence and immediate resignation of the Gyeongnam Police Chief

 

* Immediate cancellation of all arrests of union members and withdrawal of all damage claims

 

* Complete prohibition of strike-breaking replacement transport

 

 

 

5. Forward to Class Struggle

 

 

 

But we will not stop here. Achieving these demands and punishing those responsible are urgent tasks that must be won. But that alone is not enough. The root of such deaths lies in the capitalist system itself. Overthrowing murderous capital and advancing toward socialism, where workers hold power—this is our historic task.

 

We appeal to all workers, youth, and oppressed people:

 

Organize the anger!

 

Expand the struggle!

 

Advance toward a general strike and mass unity!

 

Comrade Seo Gwang-seok is not dead.

 

His struggle will live on in the struggles of the living workers.

 

 

 

- 국가폭력에 의한 노동자 살인에 계급투쟁으로 맞서자!

 2026년 4월 20일, 경남 진주 CU 물류센터 앞에서 벌어진 서광석 동지의 죽음은 결코 우연한 사고가 아니다. 화물연대 전남컨테이너지부장이었던 서광석 열사는 연좌농성 중 경찰의 진압 과정에서 대체수송 화물차에 치여 사망했다.

 

이는 단순한 불행한 사건이 아니다. 자본과 국가권력이 결탁하여 노동자를 짓밟은, 공권력에 의한 명백한 살인이다.

 

 

 

1. 사건의 배경: 구조적 착취의 필연적 귀결

 

 

 

서광석 열사의 죽음은 어느 날 갑자기 발생한 것이 아니다. 그것은 수년에 걸쳐 쌓여온 착취와 탄압의 결과다.

 

BGF리테일은 'BGF로지스-지역 하청운송사-화물기사'로 이어지는 다단계 하청 구조를 통해 수익을 극대화하면서, 노동자에게는 장시간 노동과 저운임, 감정노동, 대차비용 전가를 강요해왔다. 기업 이익이 813% 증가하는 동안 운임 인상은 고작 0.6%에 불과했다. 이것이 이번 투쟁이 시작된 물적 토대다.

 

화물연대 CU지회는 올해 1월부터 원청 BGF리테일을 상대로 7차례에 걸쳐 교섭을 요구했다. BGF는 단 한 번도 응하지 않았다. 물량 축소, 계약 해지, 손해배상 청구 — 이것이 자본이 노동자에게 내놓은 답이었다. 4월 5일 파업 돌입 후에도 원청은 대화 대신 대체수송을 강행했다.

 

2,700명의 화물노동자들이 현장에 집결해 있었다. 그들은 생존권을 지키기 위해 싸우고 있었다. 그 투쟁은 전적으로 정당했다. 그러나 돌아온 것은 대화가 아닌 탄압이었고, 결국 한 동지의 죽음이었다.

 

 

 

2. 세 가지 책임

 

 

 

첫째, CU BGF 자본의 책임이다.

 

BGF리테일은 노동자들의 정당한 교섭 요구를 7차례 묵살하고, 파업 파괴를 위해 대체수송을 강행했다. 대체 차량 운전자는 사람이 앞에 쓰러져 있음에도 멈추지 않았다. 뒤따르던 차량들도 마찬가지였다. 이윤을 위해 노동자의 생명을 희생시킨 것이다. BGF는 살인자본이다.

 

둘째, 경찰 공권력의 책임이다.

 

경남 경찰청은 파업 노동자들의 안전을 외면하고, BGF의 하수인이 되어 대체수송 차량 출차를 지원했다. 노동자가 차에 치여 사망해가는 상황에서도 골든타임을 방치했다. 이후 법원은 분노한 조합원들에게도 동시에 구속영장을 발부했다. 국가는 중립이 아니다. 국가는 지배계급의 도구다. 이것이 다시 한 번 입증되었다.

 

셋째, 현 정권의 책임이다.

 

이재명 정부는 노동탄압 없는 대한민국을 공약했다. 그 공약이 선포된 지 두 달도 되지 않아 파업 현장에서 노동자가 죽임을 당했다. 노동자계급을 기만하고 농락한 것이다. 보수 수구 정당뿐만 아니라 민주당도 자본의 이해를 대변한다. 저들을 믿지 말라. 우리의 계급적 단결만이 노동자의 권리를 지킨다.

 

 

 

3. 이 죽음은 개인의 비극이 아니다

 

 

 

서광석 열사의 죽음은 자본주의체제가 만들어낸 죽음이다.

 

화물연대는 2009년 박종태 열사 이후 17년 만에 또 한 명의 동지를 잃었다. 최복남, 김동윤, 박종태, 그리고 서광석.

 

자본주의가 지속되는 한 이 죽음은 반복될 것이다. 노동자의 생명보다 이윤을 우선하는 체제를 끝장내지 않는 한, 제2, 제3의 서광석은 계속될 것이다.

 

화물노동자들의 투쟁은 한 사업장의 문제가 아니다. 이것은 한국 사회 전체 계급전쟁의 일부다. CU 물류센터 정문 앞에서 벌어진 일은, 다단계 하청으로 짓눌린 모든 노동자, 플랫폼 노동으로 내몰린 모든 노동자, 파업할 권리조차 박탈당한 모든 노동자에게 닥치고 있는 현실이다.

 

 

 

4. 우리의 요구

 

 

 

- 서광석 열사 사망에 대한 철저한 진상 규명과 책임자 처벌

 

- CU BGF 자본의 노조 탄압 즉각 중단 및 화물연대 요구안 전면 수용

 

- 경찰 폭력 진압 지휘 책임자 처벌, 경남 경찰청장 즉각 사퇴

 

- 분노한 조합원에 대한 모든 구속 즉각 취소, 손해배상 청구 전면 철회

 

- 파업 파괴 대체수송 전면 금지

 

 

 

5. 계급투쟁으로 나아가자

 

 

 

그러나 우리는 여기서 멈추지 않는다.

 

요구안의 수용과 책임자 처벌은 반드시 쟁취해야 할 당면 목표다. 그러나 그것만으로는 충분하지 않다. 이러한 죽음의 근원에는 자본주의체제 그 자체가 있다. 살인자본을 타도하고, 노동자권력을 수립하는 사회주의로 나아가는 것 — 이것이 우리의 역사적 과제다.

 

우리는 모든 노동자와 청년, 억압받는 민중에게 호소한다.

 

분노를 조직하자!

 

투쟁을 확대하자!

 

총파업과 대중적 단결로 나아가자!

 

서광석 열사는 죽지 않았다.

 

열사의 투쟁은 살아있는 노동자들의 투쟁 속에서 계속될 것이다.
